When starting out, you need to gather your material together. You need roughly equal quantities of dry woody stems and wet leafy waste. Add your material in layers--if the mix is dry, add water, then replace the lid and leave covered until you have more compost to add. It is better to add a bucketful of waste rather than a handful or two. Make sure there is adequate drainage--ideally, place the bin on open soil to allow excess liquid to drain away. Shred as much material as possible, especially hard and woody material so there’s a bigger surface area for the microbes to work on.
